Imagine what some university reading lists are saying about our society – that women and people of colour did not write in the 20th and 21st centuries, and certainly not novels worthy of beady academic analysis. Imagine someone from the future trying to understand who we were in the 21st century, based on the books taught in universities.
Bernardine Evaristo

I majored in history and it irritated me so much when the history of POC was left out of certain events or courses I learnt. Throughout history our contributions have been ignored to quite an extent and that’s why so many people still don’t really understand history as it is but only understand it as it is taught.

I love Evaristo! There is a lot of work going on about changing syllabuses here and I hope it has an effect.

I’m starting to love her too. I finished Girl, Woman, Other last week; it was amazing! I hope the change in syllabuses shows results.
