Hi friends!
I cannot believe it’s already the end of July. Half of the year is gone! This year is flying by, but truthfully as I get older, the years are becoming a blur, haha…
I set a few reading goals this year:1). To read 20 books by Black women, a wonderfully challenged started on Instagram. 2). To read outside my comfort zone. 3). To read more romance novels. I think I will easily accomplish all these goals by the end of the year. I’m currently on book 13, written by a Black woman, and my reads include contemporary fiction, historical fiction, non-fiction, romance, and young adult fantasy. As far as romance goes, I’ve read a few romance books, and I haven’t enjoyed any. I must be selecting the wrong ones; I’ll keep working on this goal.
What are your reading goals this year?
Here is a list of my top five books so far this year, in no particular order:
- Recitatif by Toni Morrison
- Girl, Woman, Other by Bernardine Evaristo
- Communion: The Female Search For Love by bell hooks
- All About Love: New Visions by bell hooks
- Kindred by Octavia Butler
All excellent reads and I strongly recommend them.
So, reader, have you read any of these books? What are some of your favorite reads this year?
Lovely to see Girl, Woman, Other on your list! I strongly recommend Mr Loverman by Evaristo, too. Looking at my reading, I’ve read 23 books by women of colour, another one by a non binary person of colour and several by a mix of different genders and ethnicities, out of 111 so far. I’m pleased I’m keeping up my stats and sharing a lot of interesting and (mainly!) good books! Well done to you, too.

Yes, I’ve heard a lot about Mr. Loverman. Would you suggest that over Manifesto? Or are both good reads? Also, well done with keeping up with your stats!

I’ve not read Manifesto yet (it’s top of my list but I’m just waiting for our new indie bookshop to open locally so I can order it through there) but I’d say if you can get that, probably that one first, as you might get clues about the writing of Mr Loverman. Or Mr Loverman first in case there’s spoilers!!
