Mass media tends to ignore the diversity of black experience. The worst aspects of black life are fictionalized on television and in cinema so as to reproduce race and class stereotypes…images of loving black people are often deemed unrealistic no matter the class of the characters portrayed…if love is not present in our imaginations, it will not be there in our lives.

Media portrayals have some catching up to do with books, don’t they, which are showing more nuanced, less monolithic portrayals and including Black joy as well as pain. We’re getting all these ads now with a mixed race family – very rare to get an all-Black family in an ad still, so much so that we shout out when we notice it.

The media have a lot of catching up to do indeed. But, that’s the great joy of reading; you can broaden your mind and think outside the box.
